They talk about how lucky they are that they are the hunters, not the hunted. After Whitney turns in, Rainsford hears gunshots on the shore, and as he tries to shift closer to investigate, he falls overboard. When he realizes that he cannot swim back to the boat, he decides to swim toward the island, where he washes up on shore.

Rainsford finds himself at an oddly out of place chateau. He finds the owner, General Zaroff. Zaroff is also a big game hunter, and so he and Rainsford have a long, engaging discussion about hunting and animals. Once Rainsford gets to the island, he meets a general who loves to hunt. When Rainsford comes face to face with the general, he realizes that there is no escape from the general.

The main character in the short story, Rainsford, a guy who gets stuck on Trap Island, has to defeat General Zaroff and his game. This incident causes him to kill Ivan, the servant, and General Zaroff. However, it is his desire to do anything that motivates him to survive and defeat Zaroff's game. First, his goal is to simply do anything to survive.
