Joined Nov 18, Messages I'm trying to upgrade from Home Premium to Vista Ultimate. When I run the setup the Upgrade option is not available and a message says "Cannot upgrade from staged to non-staged version". I'm running 32 bit and upgrading to 32 bit. I've seen lots of similar complaints on various TechNet and other forums.
I am on the verge of doing a complete new install, but can't face the amount of work that will involve. DaveA David. However, when I run it, it grays out the option to do an upgrade and only lets me perform a clean install spouting some error about a newer version or something.
I cannot afford to do a clean install and wipe my hard-drive clean, so I need to do an upgrade. I researched this problem on the internet and found some suggestions to uninstall Vista SP 1 before trying to upgrade.
However, I am unable to do that as well. I am also unable to find the actual KB update-file anywhere on my computer. This is what Microsoft says on the Vista web site: "In order to upgrade your PC to a higher edition of Windows Vista you need to purchase a Windows Anytime Upgrade Pack through the windowsanytimeupgrade. The pack contains your product key, Windows Anytime Upgrade disc, and upgrade instructions. Otherwise you will have to do a clean install.
As long as you do not touch the Dell recovery partition on the hard drive, you will stil have the Dell factory disk image if ever needed. I don't know what you have installed that precludes you from doing a clean install.
If you do an "upgrade" with the Vista Ultimate disc that you have, you may have to reinstall programs, anyway. Windows 11 64 bit Pro SSD drives. Cakewalk by BandLab and Studio One 4.
