Tool the grudge meanings

Even though Keenan provides a way for escape, he does not want us to become complacent; he reminds us of the only outcome if we choose to hang on to the grudge. This begs the question, deeper into what? I believe when a grudge comes to be, it is born out of reason. We were wronged in some way, but as a grudge lingers in our mind it begins to create a false reality. The truth we see with our eyes becomes distorted when it passes through the filter of the grudge. Our real self is buried away within our subconscious; seemingly powerless to regain control.

So we continue downward. Now is the time to make a choice. This stanza is the first time in the song that Keenan refers to the grudge as a stone. The process of separating ourselves from the grudge is not easy. We have to completely humble ourselves to the level of a child. He is saying there must be a return to innocence; all of the unnecessary weight in life must be eradicated.

His imagery of the oceans and waters is an allusion to baptism. A thorough cleansing is necessary for change, but with change comes reward. Perseverance breeds greatness. Keenan breaks down in the end of the song. He lets out a passionate scream — I envision him falling to his knees with his hands on his head. He knows he must let go, has to let go. Change is never easy, but he has to try. A grudge begins in reason but transforms into a powerful entity capable of destroying lives.

The only way to escape the endless spiral of increasing desperation to control everything around us is to choose to change. No matter how attractive the crown is, we need to take it off. In the end, it is up to us…it always has been. I think this is a great paper! This is awesome, thanks for sharing! I agree it is awesome!

Great job I think you hit the nail on the head with that! Thanks so much for sharing!!!! Working Tool into a school paper, kudos man. I legit made an account JUST to reply to this comment. That was the most well-written meaning of a song I've ever read.

I was playing the song while reading this and I truly felt something powerful. Let's transmutate these leaden grudges into gold. The crown chakra allows for the experiences of unity and universal connectedness, as well as the integration of the whole. You are wearing the grudgd literally as your crown chakra. Also, someone else had brought up the idea of Saturn's full revolution taking about 30 Earth years So if it picks you up like a child, I think he's saying you pick this grudge up as a child and when Saturn comes back around in 30 years, it will have been just the right amount of time to have you get to the point where it is metaphorically dragging you down like a stone--"to consume you till you choose to let this go" ian on March 10, General Comment Maynard once said he used his music to get out frustrations he had of his past, and this I believe is him letting his past go.

About his Family life, his look on other people, and even God. He really sees his life of anger leading him no where.

Tool's earlier records showed Maynard's and the bend's anger and frustrations to the point where they were called an anti religious band by many. In ways they were Well Lateralus came and showed us a new side. Maynard sees the problem of hate and grudges, and the "Prison cell" it puts you in. As Saturn comes back around to show him everything, he sees it will consume him and spit him out until he chooses to let it go. The ending is so powerful. I just picture Maynard thinking of all the things he's mad about, and not just letting them go, but literally changing his mind set as he screams his heart out.

This song is an utter masterpiece. Plugged in online didn't give this album enough credit, cause I see more Christian lyrics in this song alone than I do in some songs on Christian Radio. Funny actually. My opinion though -Zach indeed on March 19, Link. No Replies Log in to reply. General Comment People use grudges as a means of control and supremacy, to make other people feel lesser. Resentment is futile. General Comment Here is my interpretation of 'The Grudge' "Crown of negativity" The first thing that pops into my head is Jesus' crown of thorns, a burden.

The crown is thereby also a symbol of religion — but this is a negative symbol. Because these days Christianity is a controlling power, which has decided for us what we will and will not tolerate. We carry the crown on our heads, the highest place of our body, and it overshadows everything else. We stamp other people, judging them and refuse to forgive them. This hatred of a foreign party - another person, another religion, another culture - most people have to maintain.

Many people clutch their grudge as if it were a cornerstone, everything their unity if is a group of people is build on. In such cases we always try to justify denials.

We cultivate our hatred and dare not to let it go, because we are afraid to make mistakes. So we put ourselves in a prison cell of ultimatum. The most interesting part of the song deals with Saturn. After a little research has been up to me that everything in the song forms a synthesis. First, it takes Saturn about 29 years to go round the sun. So the choice is between Capricorn and Aries.

Capricorn is ruled by Saturn Saturn is the creator of civilization and the social order, representing authority. Capricorn is stubborn, cautious and disciplined.

Aries is ruled by Mars Mars usually associated with strength, spontaneity and energy. Aries is bold and impulsive. In many ways it is the complete contrast to Capricorn. You could say that Aries is the Zodiac pioneer. By the way … Maynard a Ram himself. The grudge will narrow thinking further define and say that things can only be one way.

Rhea Cronos' wife gave birth to another son, Zeus, and she gives her husband a stone instead of the child, and Cronos swallows the stone, believing it is his son. Later Zeus kills his father and sets his siblings free. The song raises the question: Will go down like a stone — just like all the others ones —, or you will be like Zeus Aries , escaping it all?

Lead represents decay and death. Like so many of Tools songs, this song is a metaphor for personal development. Afterthebattle on February 04, Link. Wow,that was quite the interpretation. I was just thinking the same as I listened to the song and read people's interpretation and thought of the Tree of Life. How I get it is something like, you know, these ten sephiroth where 1 is, as you said it yourself, union with God and that must indeed mean forgiveness.

In the lowest end of the Tree we have Malkuth, which represent the earthly kingdom. Saturn represents a change in ones life, and that change could for that matter very well be the choice of forgiveness or letting go of something. I don't know why but lead makes me think of the earth and gravity.

Maybe because of its weight but I am not sure. And by the way, isn't gold associated with Kether 1? The interpretation of the churchs believing the earth to be the center of the universe and being proven wrong, is very interesting but I don't quite get it that way.

But I like that thinking :. Originally Posted by savelints8. Last edited by Godin; at PM.. To me it means a song to release your negative thoughts after another booooring school day I can go home and scream with the song and finally feel released.

I think it holds a more personal meaning related to the indiviudal mind trying to ''let go'' of all bad thoughts and cleanse the soul from the past. Rate This Thread You have already rated this thread.

If you refuse to forgive, then you are never going to grow. Not to sound emo, but this song helped me when my girlfriend broke up with me. It taught me that to grow from our experiences, we must learn to forgive and move on, otherwise, we may drown.

Now, I am a better person than I was. In relation to the song I was transformed, by the ultimate alchemists Tool , from a hateful, depressed, sinking boulder, into a golden pheonix, risen from my own ashes. I agree with most of the posts, this song is obviously about the dangers of holding a grudge. Someone wrote something about the scarlet lettermen being a reference to the Bible being written in red ink. I don't think that's quite right.

There is a book called The Scarlet Letter. In the book, all who were convicted of commiting adultury were required to where a large red letter "A" on their chests. Go with the whole grudge idea Unable to forgive your scarlet lettermen. It could well read, unable to forgive those who are adulterous. Or maybe, unable to forgive those whom everyone thinks is a horrible person.

I am sure if I read the book again I could find something a little more relavant. I am sure it has something to do with the moral of that story. I am also sure that this was a heartfelt song and is probably a metaphor in general for holding a grudge against someone has done you wrong. Also when Saturn comes around again Are you doomed to relive the same mistakes during the next 30 yr cycle?

Have you let your grudges go? If you watch the video great vid I personally take the songs as a symbol of how we are as humans operating under religion. If you see how the whole community ignores and scrutinizes as they blindly walk into the church. They sit in church and will hate who ever doesn't conform to him.

When everyone goes home at then end of the day, they all have problems. Judge not unless ye be judged thyself So they all hate the one guy because of following the pastures desires, and end up turning on each other. Simply put, making good others suffer because you are unable to think for yourself will ultimately destroy yourself. I think it's a very accurate description of modern religion. It cause more damage to community then any good.

The grudge would be the grudge held against the ones that don't use a pasture as a higher power. We don't need pastures to connect to God. This song according to Maynard is about the anger one's spirit has after dying while in the midst of a goal.

He said that it's about a cartel member in Arizona who had his head cut off and in retaliation and out of sheer anger and wrath, he stays until he can cut the head off of all involved in taking his head. In simple terms the song is about the dangers of holding a grudge, even when you are in the 'right', when the healthy option is to let go and forgive.

The Kabbalah Tree of Life is imagery used in several of Tools songs Lateralus for one as well as in album and stage artwork. On the tree of life "the one" is at the top and "the ten" is at the bottom which is referenced in the following lyrics along with release from burden. Just as in the song the protagonist is judging all the actions of the person he holds the grudge against based on a past wrong. This was meant to be a short interpretation funny how Tool makes that impossible. The whole song talks about feeling imprisoned by the grudges being held against the singer just like Jesus was held in prison and executed because of the grudge against him.

Clever and beautiful song about alchemicaL philosophy. So large in is scope, oridinary definitions can not wrap around this subject, Alchemy. This song is full Alchemy symbols and archtypes.
